Thirty Photographs of the Mother Inaugurating the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education.

Dear Friends,

During the early years of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, children were not allowed to live in the Ashram. In the early 1940s, when a number of families were admitted to the Ashram, the Mother decided to open a school to provide education to the children who had come with their parents. On 2 December 1943 she formally opened a school for about twenty children and she herself was one of the teachers. On 24 April 1951 she presided over a convention at Pondicherry where it was resolved to establish an “international university centre.” On 6 January 1952 she inaugurated the Sri Aurobindo International University Centre. This name was changed to Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education in 1959.

Thirty photographs of the Mother inaugurating the Sri Aurobindo International University Centre on 6 January 1952 (taken by noted photographers of the Ashram like Venkatesh, Robi Ganguli and Chimanbhai) have been published in the online forum of Overman Foundation.

With warm regards,

Thank you , Anurag on offering us the memorable and evocative photographs of the Divine Mother inaugurating the Sri Aurobindo International Center Of Education..These pictures literally represent the renascent story of the resurgent education of the Soul in the ashram -so to speak – and Her seeing around the school is quite a significant gesture of Grace and Blessing ..

Surendranath Jauhar: I was one of the small instruments for the establishment of the University Centre in the year 1951. I persuaded Dr. Shayama Prasad Mukherjee to inaugurate.

Several times I was questioning the Mother and wanted to know about its future. The Mother was always trying to explain to me and one day She sent the following letter which is reproduced here-under:

    To,
    Surendranath,

I am perfectly sure, I am quite confident, there is not the slightest doubt in my mind, that this University, which is being established here, will be the greatest seat of knowledge upon earth.

It may take fifty years, it may take a hundred years, and you may doubt about my being there; I may be there or not, but these children of mine will be there to carry out my work.

And those who collaborate in this divine work today will have the joy and pride of having participated in such an exceptional achievement.
